Breton Sound Marina is a
gateway to the wild and virtually unexplored
Biological Reserves in southeastern Louisiana
wetlands commonly called Marshland. The wildlife &
plant life area,
which spans 200 acres, is inhabited with a variety
of neo tropical migratory song birds as well as
shore birds, wading bird, water fowl, raptors, mammals
& plants.
Our Coastal Marshes, aquatic estuaries, are mile
upon mile of brackish waterways, bayous and ship
channels connecting our Lakes to the Mississippi
River & Gulf of Mexico. This makes exploring a truly
unique and remarkable experience. With more than 600
species of birds, 200 species of mammals,
countless raptors and fish, the area is the ultimate
destination for eco-tourists seeking adventure at
its bests.
Our mission:
Work to preserve our natural resource of estuaries
by protecting and restoring the lands and waters
essential to the richness and diversity of wildlife. ECO Estuaries along the Gulf of
Mexico coasts are formed when fresh water
from rivers flows into and mixes with salt water
from the ocean. In estuaries, the fresh river water
is blocked from streaming into the open ocean by
either surrounding mainland, peninsulas, barrier
islands, or fringing salt marshes. This mixing of
fresh and salt water creates a unique environment
that brims with life of all kinds -- a transition
zone between the land and sea known as an estuary.
The estuary gathers and holds an abundance of
life-giving nutrients from the land and from the
ocean, forming an ecosystem that contains more life
per square inch than the richest Midwest farmland. |

The Biloxi Wildlife Management
Area
|
 |
The Biloxi
Wildlife Management
Area is located in
Upper St. Bernard Parish about 40 miles east of New
Orleans. It is accessible by boat via Breton
Sound Marine
in Hopedale. The 39,583-acre tract is owned and leased
to the
Department of Wild Life and
Fisheries by the
Biloxi Marsh Lands Corporation.
The area
is a low brackish to saline marsh. A few oak trees are
present on old ridges but the major vegetation includes
marsh-hay cord grass, black rush, hog cane, smooth cord
grass, salt-grass, glasswort, and three square. Widgeon
grass is the main submerged aquatic plant occurring
there.
A
tremendous number of bayous, sloughs and potholes make
the Biloxi tract an excellent producer of fish, shrimp,
crabs, waterfowl, and furbearers. The few canal spoil
banks and ridges scattered throughout the marsh provide
escape for birds and mammals from rising water levels
during storms or high tides.
